Wooden toys—the “ace up the sleeve” driving socioeconomic development in Yunhe County, Zhejiang Province—are a traditional, advantageous, and pillar industry for the county. In 1994, Yunhe County was designated by China’s Ministry of Agriculture as the “Hometown of Chinese Wooden Toys,” and in 2003 it was awarded the honorary title of “China Wooden Toy City.” The wooden toy industry in Yunhe County originated in the 1970s–1980s and has since evolved over more than 30 years. Through the dedicated efforts of multiple generations, a distinctive industrial cluster has taken shape—characterized by transforming small toys into a large-scale industry, small products into expansive global markets, and simple craftsmanship into rich cultural value. Today, this cluster serves as a core force enabling Yunhe County to compete internationally and has become a unique local economic phenomenon—the Yunhe Wooden Toy Industrial Cluster. This article introduces the historical background and current status of Yunhe’s wooden toy industry, analyzes its competitive advantages in terms of industry structure, market positioning, and environmental support, and identifies existing challenges—including family-run production models, heavy reliance on OEM export arrangements, weak brand awareness, and limited capacity for independent export operations. Based on this analysis, the article proposes practical, rational recommendations to promote the further rapid, healthy, scientific, and sustainable development of Yunhe’s wooden toy industry.
